What Will Your Texas Permit Be Checked Against?

Codes Are Adopted City by City

Texas has no single building code enforced statewide. Cities adopt codes by ordinance; state law sets the IRC and IBC as they existed on May 1, 2012 as the municipal baseline, and many cities adopt newer editions.

Sealed by a Texas-Licensed Engineer

Engineering is sealed by an engineer licensed by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Board rules allow electronic seals and signatures (22 TAC 137.33).

Coastal Windstorm Requirements

In the 14 coastal counties and parts of Harris County east of Highway 146, most properties need a Texas Department of Insurance windstorm certificate of compliance to get TWIA coverage.

Codes change and local amendments vary. We confirm the exact requirements for your address in your quote. Information checked October 2026.
